London Committee

Scope and Content

This committee was formed in 1778 and was dissolved in 1869. Together with the Country Committee, it was an active executive body nominated by the General Meeting. Its twenty members were appointed at the adjournment of the General Meeting; a quarter of them were retired by rotation each year. This committee returned reports to both the Yearly and General Meetings. Its relationship with the Country Committee was not always an easy one; for further details see Henry Thompson's 'History of Ackworth School' pp 38, 64, 67, but neither committee had the power to reverse the decisions of the other; matters that they could not resolve were referred to the General Meeting. Initially, this committee was involved in processing applications for admission to the school, but the bulk of this work was undertaken by the Superintendent.
