Letters and papers from a box file labelled by EF 'Correspondence re. Hughes, including permissions. From Edite Kroll, Danny W (photo), Peter Redgrove (photo). Also Brenda Hedden correspondence'.

Contains correspondence relating to Feinstein's research for her biography of Ted Hughes - primarily with Brenda Hedden, but also including letters from Keith Sagar, Lucas Myers, Anne Stevenson, Philip Hobsbaum, Michael Boddy, Jill Barber, Daniel Weissbort, and Peter Redgrove. There are also two publications which relate to Hughes.

  • /1-21: Correspondence with and relating to Brenda Hedden, regarding information supplied by Hedden and her representation in the biography (6 April-31 July 2001). Of this material, the following pieces are closed: /3, 6-8, 10-11, 14 and 20.
  • /22-26: Printouts of emails relating to permissions associated with the biography, including the quotation of a poem by Robin Morgan and extracts from an interview with Drue Heinz (2 July 2001).
  • /27-28: Undated letter from, and printed email exchange with, Keith Sagar, relating to: the interview he did with EF for her Hughes biography; clarification of a point about a house-hunting trip [of Hughes's] to Tyneside, and the attitude of Hughes's mother towards Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill (on consulting correspondence, he realises this was an impression he had rather than information received through any direct statements); letters to him from Ted Hughes which have gone to the British Library; the possibility of him editing work by Hughes; a critical work of his called Literature and the Crime Against Nature, which Hughes saw and liked (7-14 June 2001).
  • /29: Printout of an email exchange with Lucas Myers relating to his memoir of Plath and Hughes (Crow Steered Bergs Appeared, published in 2001), and his objections to a review of this by Diane Middlebrook (23-24 May 2001).
  • /30: Printout of an email from Carolyne Wright who approves the pages from the biography in which she is mentioned (31 July 2001).
  • /31: Printout of an email from Anne Stevenson congratulating EF on the completion of her biography (1 June 2001).
  • /32: Printout of an email from Philip Hobsbaum, granting permission to be quoted in EF's Hughes biography (30 May 2001).
  • /33: Copy letter from EF to David Holbrook requesting permission to quote in the biography from a letter of his about Plath's poem 'Edge' (31 July 2001).
  • /34: List of queries relating to notes/references in the biography.
  • /35-43: Correspondence with Brenda Hedden, along with extracts from drafts of EF's biography, with commentaries by Hedden; all relates to Hedden's relationship with Hughes and events which took place in the late 1960s/early 1970s (28 May-24 September 2001). Of this material, the following pieces are closed: 37 and 41-43.
  • /44: 16-page printout from various emails sent to EF by Michael Boddy during March and April 2001: contains Boddy's reminiscences of Hughes, with some mention of Plath.
  • /45-46: Two copy letters from Feinstein to Brenda Hedden about episodes relating to Hedden in the Hughes biography (31 July 2001).
  • /47: Copy of a letter from Brenda Hedden to Ion Trewin (editor-in-chief of Weidenfeld and Nicolson), regarding various passages in the biography (3 October 2001). This piece is closed.
  • /48: Rough draft of a letter from EF to Brenda Hedden, attached to a 12-page printout of sections from the biography relating to Hedden.
  • /49: Copy of a letter from Brenda Hedden to Ion Trewin regarding EF's biography (25 July 2001).
  • /50-52: Letters exchanged between EF and Brenda Hedden, with extracts of sections relating to her from the draft biography; relates to her representation and various factual points (12-19 July 2001). Pieces 50 and 51 are closed.
  • /53: Photocopy note from Jill Barber, with copies of annotated extracts from EF's biography which relate to Barber (12 June 2001).
  • /54-55: Letters from Brenda Hedden to (a) Ion Trewin of Weidenfeld and Nicholson and (b) Richard Brooks, Arts Editor of the Sunday Times, regarding what she felt to be a misleading statement made by EF to Brooks about the termination of Hedden's relationship with Hughes (8 October 2001).
  • /56: Card from Glen Fallows, who is glad EF has used material from his article about Hughes in her biography, and adding another anecdote about Hughes (7 August 2001).
  • /57-58: Letter from EF along with a contract with Russell & Volkening Inc., regarding EF's use of material from a Drue Heinz interview with Hughes in her biography (3 July-17 August 2001).
