Scope and Content

These papers relate specifically to the work of the Indian States Enquiry Committee, both in India and after its return to England, but they also include a number of items of more direct relevance to British domestic politics.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Colin Campbell Davidson, 1st Viscount Davidson (1889-1970) was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1923 to 1924, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, 1924 to 1927, and Chairman of the Unionist Party from 1927 to 1930. From 1931 to 1937 he was again Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and it was during this period that he went to India as chairman of the Indian States Enquiry Committee (Financial), one of the committees set up under the Indian Round Table Conference.
