A collection of guides, handbooks, rules and regulations issued for both staff and students of De Montfort University and its predecessors. The guides vary in content and include information and advice for new students, study guides, accommodation rules, Student Union handbooks, staff procedures, directories, regulations and procedures affecting students, and guides for effective use of the Library. The guides for students are particularly interesting as they reveal the changing student experience, touching on issues of finance, accommodation, studying, friendships, social activity, welfare, sexuality, substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease, and mental health.

Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Leicester School of Art was founded in 1870; the Leicester Technical School in 1888. In 1897 the two Schools merged and were taken over by the Town Council of the County Borough of Leicester and renamed the Leicester Municipal Technical and Art School. A new building (now known as the Hawthorn Building) was constructed.
The School went through various changes of name. In 1919 it was restructured into two separate departments, called the City of Leicester School of Arts and Crafts and the City of Leicester Technical School, although the Schools were still managed by one Committee and shared the same buildings. In 1925 they became the City of Leicester College of Arts and Crafts and the City of Leicester College of Technology, and in 1929 the Leicester College of Art and the Leicester College of Technology.
In 1969 the Colleges formally amalgamated to form the City of Leicester Polytechnic. In 1975 this merged with the Leicester College of Education and was known as the Leicester Polytechnic. In 1992 the institution was awarded university status and changed its name to De Montfort University.
