Scope and Content

Correspondence of Handley Bird, subsequently typed in relation to proposed biography, covering the period from 1888 to 1914. The correspondence includes a letter from Robert Stanes welcoming Handley Bird to Coimbatore on his arrival in January 1888, letters from Handley Bird to Marion Miller before and after they were married and letters to some of their children. Handley Bird describes his missionary work and the opposition he encountered, the opening of a girls' school, taking Tamil lessons, the spread of cholera, visiting local schools and villages and the prospect of Marion Miller travelling from England to join him in India.
