The collection comprises of material relating to the South Shetland Islands

Administrative / Biographical History

George Powell was born circa 1796 in England. He joined Messrs Daniel Bennett and Sons and in 1818 made his first voyage south in command of Dove. During his third voyage he discovered the South Orkney Islands (1821). He went to work for Messrs Enderby in 1823.
