Alan Wiper Photographs

Scope and Content

Black and white photographs by Alan Wiper (1932-1973), largely of architecture and antiquities of the north of England, especially from the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. The collection reflects Wiper's interest in the activities of theArchitectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland, of which he was the excursions secretary for several years. It covers sites in Co. Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, and the North and West Ridings of Yorkshire, together withtwo photographs of Jedburgh Abbey, one of Reculver in Kent, and one of Porchester, Hampshire.

Administrative / Biographical History

Educated at St Oswald's School and Whinney Hill School, Durham, Alan Wiper worked for the University of Durham from the age of 14, and became Chief Technician in the Dept of Chemistry. He also undertook photographic commissions for otheruniversity departments, the Dean and Chapter, and other clients. Many of his photographs appeared in published works.

Acquisition Information

Nos 1-33 were deposited by the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland, 1974. Nos 34-71 were presented by Dr. C.W. Gibby, 1987.
