Scope and Content

Requisitioned by Ministry of War Transport as a training ship for Docks Operating Groups, Royal Engineers, 1941. Torpedoed and sunk 1943.

  • Lists of crew including rating, address and next of kin;
  • copies of telegram messages notifying next of kin of fate of crew following sinking of ship, including blank templates;
  • list of service gunners who failed to survive;
  • copies of copies of correspondence sent to various companies and organisations in notification of loss of ship;
  • copies of correspondence sent to survivors of the ship making arrangements for return to UK, including arrangements for the Admiralty to interview the most senior survivor, First Officer A. P. Paterson;
  • copies of correspondence with next of kin regarding payment of wages, pension, personal effects, death certificates and other payments;
  • copies of correspondence with survivors regarding payment of wages, lost effects, allotments, shipwreck unemployment indemnity and pensions;
  • copies of correspondence with other organisations regarding payment of crew wages;
  • copies of correspondence with, and responses recieved from, Lord Leathers concerning the circumstances of loss of ship;
  • insurance claim for loss of ship;
  • list of allotments paid to crew;
  • receipts for ex-gratia payments to crew for loss of effects and list of payments made;
  • list of crew members who signed E1 forms.
