Administrative / Biographical History

United Caledonian Breweries Ltd, Edinburgh, Scotland, was registered in May 1960 as a limited liability company. It operated as a management company for the Scottish interests of Northern Breweries of Great Britain Ltd (later United Breweries Ltd), York, England, and London, England, which merged in 1962 with Charrington & Co Ltd, London, through a holding company, Charrington United Breweries Ltd, London. In 1963 the company took over the training interests of Aitchison Jeffrey Ltd, Heriot Brewery, Edinburgh; James Aitken & Co (Falkirk) Ltd, The Brewery, Falkirk, Scotland ; James Calder & Co (Brewers) Ltd, Shore Brewery, Alloa, Scotland ; John Fowler & Co Ltd, The Brewery, Prestonpans, Lothian, Scotland ; William Murray & Co Ltd, Craigmillar Brewery, Edinburgh; and George Younger & Co Ltd, Meadow Brewery, Alloa. In 1964 it controlled 440 licensed outlets. In 1966 the company merged with J & R Tennent Ltd, Wellpark Brewery, Glasgow, Scotland, to form Tennent Caledonian Breweries Ltd
