Henry Fawcett, print dealer: letters

Correspondence to the print dealer Henry O. Fawcett of 14 King Street, Covent Garden, from clients concerning his stock and the placement of commissions and reserve.

Includes correspondence from the following individuals on the following dates:

• John Percy (1817-1889), five letters (one with sketch on the back) dated between 12 February 1878 and 14 June 1888.
• William Bell Scott (1811-1890), four letters dated 19 June 1878 and 14 April 1885 (two are undated).
• Spencer Horatio Walpole (1806-1898), 24 August 1878.
• Sir George Scharf (1820-1895), 1 April 1880.
• Edward Stanhope (1840-1893), four letters dated between 3 June 1881 and 13 February 1891 (one is undated).
• Henry Spencer Walpole (1837-1913), 21 December 1883.
• Lady Charlotte Schreiber (1812-1895), 4 December 1885.
• Evelyn Wellesley, Duchess of Wellington (1855-1939), two letters dated 9 December 1887 and 25 February 1888.
• An unknown correspondent, two letters dated 1888 and 26 July 1890.
• John C. Smith, undated.
• An unknown correspondent, undated.

Henry O. Fawcett (1828 - 1911) was born in Surrey. He was a print seller and expert based at 14 King Street, Covent Garden. He acquired the lease for that property on the 1st August 1862 and remained there until his death on the 7th May 1911. His obituary in the Dublin Daily Express stated that he had assisted in the formation of many of the great collections formed in the period he was active in and that his knowledge of Alfred Durer prints was unique so far as English dealers were concerned. He married Helen Goodhall, born in Evesham, Worcestershire and they had at least two children, daughters Helen and Mary.
