Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The first expedition was an independent trip made by Harker, but he was accompanied by the Reverend A. Pagan. Harker was investigating and recording the unconformable relationship between the Carboniferous and older strata, the fossil content of the sediments, the structural geology and faults of the area and the physical topography including weathering of limestones and cave formation.
For the second expedition he joined a party led by Professor McKenny Hughes. This second trip may relate to an excursion of the Sedgwick Club. The ‘New Inn’ at Clapham was used for accommodation on both outings.
Localities visited include: Crummock Dale, Austwick Beck Head, Moughton Fell, Ribblesdale, Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent, Crag Hill, Garth House, Thornton Foss, Clapham, Ingleton, Kingsdale Beck, Norton Brow, Southwaite, Long Chimney, Horton and Clapham Cave. Geological units recorded are as follows: Bala Limestone, Mountain Limestone, Millstone Grit, Yoredale Series and Borrowdale Beds.
