Scope and Content

Administrative / Biographical History

From 1847 - 1913 General Meetings of the AA Membership were normally held on alternate Friday evenings during each annual session, running from October - May. Their business was primarily limited to notices of nominations and discussions of papers delivered by invited speakers. During the First World War, the frequency of such General Meetings reduced and from 1919 until 1946 approximately 7 or 8 meetings were held per session. From 1946, only the annual Ordinary General Meetings appear to have taken place (at which the Association's audited accounts were ratified) - the minutes for these being included within the AA Council minute books. From 1851 - 1891 the General Meetings are referred to in the minute books as 'Ordinary Meetings'. Following constitutional changes in 1891 meetings are generally referred to as 'General Meetings' or 'Ordinary General Meetings'.
