The Voluntary Architectural Examination Class was set up in 1863 by members of the Architectural Association, including C. J. Adams, Lacy W. Ridge and R. Phene Spiers, with the aim of forming a class for preparing students for the new RIBA Voluntary Examination. The class appears to have lapsed in the 1866-67 session but was reinstated under the name of the Class of Construction and Practice during the 1867-68 session.
