Scope and Content

Papers of James Louis Garvin (b.1868, d.1947) and his family; 1884-2001, n.d. They include material relating to Garvin's official and private interests, and to his family from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Garvin Papers are divided into three sections.

  • 'James Louis Garvin Papers', contains official and personal material relating to James Louis Garvin. It is divided into Official Material, Writings and Literary Material, Correspondence, Diaries, Pamphlets, etc., Press Cuttings, Photographs, and Legal, Biographical, and Miscellaneous Material. The Official Material includes material relating to James Louis Garvin's roles as editor of 'The Observer' and editor-in-chief of the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica'.
  • 'Garvin Family Papers', includes material relating to individual family members, in addition to general family, family-related, and unattributable material. Where possible, the papers within each of the sub-sections in this section have been organised on the model of the 'James Louis Garvin Papers' section, ie. Official Material, Writings and Literary Material, Correspondence, Diaries, Pamphlets, etc., Press Cuttings, Photographs, and Legal, Biographical, and Miscellaneous Material.
  • 'Material Relating to the Garvin Papers', comprises later papers related to the archive.
