The Heart Of The Matter

Administrative / Biographical History

Heart Of The Matter was a collaboration between Basil Dean, Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers to produce a stage version of Graham Greene's novel of the same name. Dean and Greene made a field-trip to Sierra Leone to absorb the atmosphere of the location, and they collaborated on the script, working in separate rooms in Dean's house. The play was tried out in Boston, but was a flop and the New York opening was cancelled. Dean undertook a hasty rewrite but Greene rejected the revised script and the project was abandoned (Mind's Eye, p. 306).
