Margaret Kennedy's 1924 novel, The Constant Nymph, is the story of the tragic love affair between a teenage girl, Tessa Sanger, and an older family friend. It was an international best-seller and it was adapted for the stage by Kennedy and Basil Dean. Noel Coward played the lead role, later replaced by the young John Gielgud, while Madeleine Carroll was engaged to play Tessa in 1928. Sir Eugene Goossens composed the incidental music.
