Scope and Content

Cover design and 48 original black & white pen and ink illustrations for M.E. Atkinson's book. The illustrations are all on cartridge paper stuck on board, often with several stuck on one board, and Jones appears to have originally arranged the illustrations according to whether they are headpieces, tailpieces or full-page illustrations. However, many of the boards have been cut up to allow for the display mounting of individual illustrations. Thirteen of the drawings have been mounted for display as part of an exhibition at Sally Hunter Gallery.

The majority of the illustrations are numbered, but Jones appears to have used a different system for numbering each type of illustration. It seems most probable, although it is not absolutely clear, that the headpieces are numbered with the relevant chapter number, the full-page illustrations with the sequential number in which they appear in the book, and the tailpieces with the relevant page number. Jones' original system of arrangement is followed as closely as possible within the file. The contents of this file do not constitute a complete suite of illustrations for the book.
