Scope and Content

Title page and 51 original black & white pen and ink illustrations for M.E. Atkinson's book. The illustrations are all on cartridge paper surface-mounted on board, and Jones appears to have originally arranged the illustrations according to whether they are headpieces, tailpieces or full-page illustrations. The headpieces appear to originally have been mounted three to a board, the full-page illustrations two to a board, and the tailpieces around five or six to a board. However, some of the boards have been cut up at a later date, perhaps to allow for the display mounting of individual illustrations. Five of the drawings have been mounted for display for exhibition or sale at some point after the book was first printed.

The majority of the illustrations are numbered, but Jones appears to have used a different system for numbering each type of illustration. It seems most probable, although it is not absolutely clear, that the headpieces are numbered with the relevant chapter number, the full-page illustrations with the sequential number in which they appear in the book, and the tailpieces with the relevant page number. Jones' original system of arrangement is followed as closely as possible within the file. The contents of this file do not constitute a complete suite of illustrations for the book.
