Clarke is disillusioned with the Conference's lack of direction and executive power, and he believes that the jealousy apparent among Methodist ranks will finally "prove our ruin".
The conflict with the trustees in Bristol is almost over. Clarke believes that only 3 or 4 preachers will join the secessionists.
