Scope and Content

This series consists of photographs and negatives of groups of SOAS staff and students. These range from 1918-1920 'Army' classes in Turkish, Arabic and Chinese, to departmental and general staff group photos of the 1990s. SOAS staff groups include formal group photographs of staff at Finsbury Circus, including the Library staff, from the 1930s; departmental and administrative staff from the 1940s/1950s and 1980s; Senior Common Room from 1957 and 1980s, and Honorary Fellows of SOAS in 1991. Informal photographs include staff and student formal dinners; Sir Cyril Philips looking at plans for the Philips Building with students outside the Bloomsbury Building; and groups of people attending academic events. A few photographs cannot be identified as to occasion, location and/or individuals present.
