Winstedt (1878 - 1966): student of Malay language and culture; District Officer, Kuala Pila (1913), first president of Raffles College, Singapore (1921-31), served the British government in various posts in South East Asia until retirement from civil service in 1935; Director, Royal Asiatic Society during 1940s - 1960s; Malay broadcaster to Malaya during WWII; influenced Britian's Malayan Union policy; retired from SOAS 1946; honorary positions in many South and South East Asian Societies and institutes.
