Sir Denison Ross: Professor of Persian and first Director of the School 1916-1938. Personal papers held in SOAS Special Collections (PP MS 8).

Sir Ralph Turner: Professor of Sanskrit (appointed 1922); Director 1938-1957; author of 'A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages' (1966). Personal papers held in SOAS Special Collections (MS 380817).

Dr Bailey: Professor/Reader; specialist in Urdu; appointed by 1922; in post 1936.

H.H. Dodwell: Professor of Oriental History, Head of the department of History, 1922-1946.

Hamilton Gibb: Professor by 1936
