Scope and Content

This series includes photographs and other images of scenes from events held at SOAS or concerning SOAS individuals. Notable SOAS events include the inaugural event for the Oriental Languages scholarships scheme at the School of Oriental Studies, 1918; the official opening of the Philips Building in 1973, attended by HRH the Queen Mother; the 80th birthday party of former Director Sir Cyril Philips; and the official opening of the Special Collections Reading Room in the SOAS Library in 1997, among many others. Important visitors are also recorded: the Dalai Lama, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, HRH Princess Anne, HRH Princess Maha Sirindhorn of Thailand, Japanese princes, former Prime Minister Sir James Callaghan, and various foreign state officials. A range of exhibitions, conferences, and other academic events as well as a selection of graduation ceremony scenes are included.
