Administrative / Biographical History
UMIST did not have powers to award honorary degrees until 1994, when it became fully independent from the Victoria University of Manchester. Instead, The Municipal College of technology had awarded (from 1928) honorary associateships to distinguished individuals, and from 1957 (after it acquired chartered status as the Manchester College of Science and Technology) honorary fellowships. From 1994, it awarded honorary degrees of its own (usually doctor of science or doctor of engineering. In addition, from 1991, a new award of Companion was awarded to individuals who had given distinguished service to the institution.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.
The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. Under the Act 2018 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for archiving and research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately.
