The Council for Training in Social Work (CTSW) was established in 1962; in 1970 it was renamed the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work (CCETSW). CCETSW was a UK-wide, statutory organisation responsible for promoting, approving and assuring the quality of education and training for social work and social care staff in the personal social services. It ceased to exist on 30 September 2001 and many of its functions passed to the four new Care Councils: the General Social Care Council (GSCC) the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), the Care Council for Wales (CCW), and the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC)
