Correspondence and Subject Files

Scope and Content

A large number of the Amalgamation's correspondence and subject files have survived. These date from before the First World War and continue up to the time of dissolution. The subject files bring together a variety of material, correspondence, minutes, memoranda, notes and printed material on a variety of subjects. These were the working files of the Amalgamation's general secretaries, the majority covering the period 1940-1976.

Arrangement

As no system of registration or arrangement was evident, the files have been arranged in artificial sub-series based on subject matter. The original file titles have been retained, where possible, and additional information about contents of the file has been added. In some cases where no titles were evident, the archivist has provided a description; these titles are contained within quotation marks. Where a file was over-filled, it has been split into several folders. The sub-series are:

  • ACS/6/8 TUC, GFTU and Labour Party
  • ACS/6/9 Government Departments
  • ACS/6/10 Other Organisations
  • ACS/6/11 Miscellaneous correspondence

Arrangement is predominantly chronological; where files deal with the same subject they are grouped together and arranged chronologically within that subject.
