Industrial Disputes Order no.1376

Scope and Content

The Industrial Disputes Order ended the government's powers to prohibit strikes dating back to wartime and set up an Industrial Disputes Tribunal, to which the Minister of Labour could refer disputes if voluntary machinery had broken down or was unavailable. Parties were able to take civil action to enforce the Tribunal's award if not complied with. The Tribunal was resorted to several times by the cotton employers and unions in the 1950s. The file consists of circulars, cuttings and a copy of Statutory Instrument No. 1376, The Industrial Disputes Order, 1951.
