Administrative / Biographical History

Undeb Bedyddwyr Cymru (Welsh Baptist Union) is an organisation to which Baptist churches are affiliated, many of whose services are held in the Welsh language. Most English Baptist churches are affiliated to the sister organisation, the Baptist Union of Great Britain and some churches are affiliated to both unions. Its headquarters were until the 2010s at T? Ilston, 94 Mansel Street, Swansea, but since then it has moved to premises on the campus of Trinity College, Carmarthen. Baptist congregations are affiliated to (rather than governed by) the Welsh Baptist Union, which provides support to them in a number of ways. One function of the Union has been the provision of insurance, by means of the Welsh Baptist Assurance Trust (later Company) Ltd., formed in 1888 to broker buildings and contents insurance for affiliated member congregations. It ceased to function at the end of 2003 and its services were then provided by a new company, Welsh Baptist Insurance Services Ltd. Another function has been the provision of loans to finance the building or rebuilding of chapels, through the Baptist Building Fund for Wales, which was established in 1862. The Union has also administered funds for the financial support of superannuated ministers.
