Advance was a publication of the Bureau of Industrial Liaison in the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. The purpose of the Bureau was to 'promote close collaboration between Industry and University', in particular sponsored research, and the selection of articles in each issue was chosen with this goal in mind. Published twice yearly, the majority of articles were written by members of staff, though contributions from prominent figures in industry were sometimes included.
Each issue concluded with a section of 'UMIST news' and a list of research grants that had been awarded during the previous year.
Note: the UMIST Bureau of Industrial Liaison had previously published a newsletter until November 1966. This newsletter had originally been produced of the Manchester Joint Research Council, a joint university-industry body, which transferred its responsibilities for running the Bureau in 1964. For copies of this newsletter see the Manchester Joint Research Council archive, JRC/7/23.
