He is somewhat overwhelmed at his new reputation as a gardener but believes he has some claim to the title; to answer Mr Robinson’s question, he has seen at most two or three good photographs of American elms, the best being of the Johnston Elm near Providence, New England, sent to him by his nephew; he has stereographs of the Boston Elm and the Washington Elm, neither of them equal to that of the Johnston Elm; he can procure a copy of his own photograph if it is desired. Annotated in Robinson’s hand ‘Letter from Oliver W. Holmes. January 1871’
