Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Laxton in Nottinghamshire is famous for being the last English village to operate the open field system of farming, and still has a manorial Court Leet with the power to issue fines. The Earls Manvers managed the Manor of Laxton until 1952 when Gervas Evelyn Pierrepont, 6th Earl Manvers, sold the Laxton estate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The estate has been in the hands of the Crown Estate Commissioners since 1981.
The Ministry of Agriculture agent responsible for the management of Laxton from the 1960s until 1981 was Peter W. Evans. The bulk of this collection consists of copies of photographs taken by Mr Evans to record renovation and building work carried out by the Ministry during this period.

Custodial History
The albums of photographs taken by Mr Evans were given by him to Mr Reginald Rose (1926-2001), son of Elmar John Rose (1888-1964), Bailiff of the manor. The remainder of the collection consists of other photographs relating to Laxton, acquired by Mr Rose and his family. The original photographs were lent to Manuscripts and Special Collections at The University of Nottingham for copying. They were copied and returned to their owner in May 2009.
