Scope and Content

From Jeremy Reed (b 1955), British poet and novelist, relating to: Lindop's agreement to edit Reed's book of essays, Poetry, madness and gender, to be published by Peter Owen (a typescript of this is included in the archive at GCL/9/1); Kathleen Raine's thoughts on the manuscript of the book; his gratitude for Lindop's sensitive editing, and Reed's plan to dedicate the book to him; arrangements for Reed to send Lindop subsequent books of his on publication; his acceptance of some of Lindop's poems for publication in Temenos; his agreement to review Lindop's collection Tourists in Temenos; a new journal called Sphinx, launching in 1988, which Reed hopes Lindop will support; Reed's gratitude for Lindop's perceptive reading of his 1988 collection, Engaging form; his recommendation of Cape as publishers for Lindop's future work - although Lindop rejects this idea because of his loyalty to Carcanet Press; Reed's thoughts on the present critical climate "which demands disposable poetry" and makes it difficult for good writing to make its way; his thoughts on Lindop's long poem about the Buddha [Touching the Earth]; the possibility of Lindop becoming Kathleen Raine's successor at the Temenos Academy; and Reed's 1997 novel Dorian.

/3 is a Christmas card containing a typescript poem, 'Birth', by Reed, and /7 is written on a poetry card (showing Reed's poems 'Winter Noon' and 'Pan'), printed by the Menard Press.

Dated at: London W1and NW3.
