Scope and Content

A series of analogue compact and micro cassettes, most of which are labelled with a note of their content. As set out in his Editorial Guidelines for the De Quincey edition, these tapes were used by Lindop to proof read his edited copy of each De Quincey piece he worked on against the original copy text (which in most cases was the first published version of the work). The original would be read back and recorded on tape, with all punctuation, capitalisation, changes of font etc spoken aloud, and the tape played back while the copy was checked. This method was also used to compare the original with any extant manuscripts of each work as well as editions which were revised by De Quincey. The tapes relate to the volumes which Lindop edited or co-edited. In the list below, the format of each tape is supplied, along with a note of Lindop's original case label (usually an abbreviated form of the work concerned; the cassette labels themselves give more detailed information about page numbers); the expanded title is also supplied along with the relevant volume in the Pickering and Chatto edition in which each work was published.

Arrangement

The cassettes are largely in the order in which Lindop stored them, although where the same work spans a number of cassettes, an attempt has been made to reunite them.
