Letters home

Scope and Content

This series consists of letters, cards and postcards sent by Lindop to his parents, and in some cases also to his brother Esmond. There is one item (a postcard) dating from 1963 and the rest of the material dates from 1966-1977. In the letters, Lindop sends his family news of his studies, writing and other activities as an undergraduate at Wadham College, Oxford, and from 1970 as a postgraduate at Wadham and Wolfson Colleges. Subsequent letters document his move to Manchester and his work as a lecturer at the University there, as well as his early research on De Quincey. There is also a small number of cuttings and other material which Lindop enclosed in letters to his parents.

Lindop had arranged the bulk of these letters and postcards in strict chronological order. This arrangement has been retained here, and further dateable material inserted at the relevant point in the sequence; undated items have been left in their original position in the series. The letters have been divided into bundles based on the year of sending.
