University magazines

Scope and Content

News Sheet, May 1963 - September 1993. University Magazine, October 1993 - [2015].

A University News Sheet was the first internal communications publication for the University community. Its first issue was on 15 May 1963 with the expectation that it would be published on a monthly basis and contain ‘a calendar of forthcoming events, details of new academic appointments and news of general interest concerning the university and its buildings’.

The original typescript sheets were superseded by a more sophisticated news sheet in June 1981. This was the first edition to contain illustrations. The University News Sheet was re-styled again in October 1993 to include colour photography. In keeping with its new image and the University’s development of its visual identity, it changed its name to the ‘University Magazine’. The University Magazine continued to be published on a monthly basis for 9-10 months of the year (it was typically not published for 2 months during the summer vacation period) until 2015. It was superseded in April 2015 by the 'Staff Digest', a new weekly summary of staff news and events from across the University circulated by email with links to news items.
