Scope and Content

From Glyn [Hughes], poet and novelist (b. 1935), who refers to Wednesday Early Closing, the atmosphere it conveys, the similarities between Nicholson's childhood and his own (spent in Middlewich, Cheshire, during the 1940s), and comments on Methodism as represented in Nicholson's book. He suggests that there may be too much detail about family relations in the autobiography, and not enough exploration of Nicholson's psychology as he grew up. He also regrets that Nicholson has not written about his subsequent life in Millom. Other topics covered include: Nicholson's The Shadow of Black Combe; his own work on drafting an historical novel to be called The Story of Anne Wylde; and his forthcoming move to Pinehurst, Farnborough, as Southern Arts Association Writer in Residence, based in the Divisional Library HQ.

Dated at: Athens, Greece; Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire; Farnborough, Hants.
