Letter from Lord Mountbatten to Auchinleck, reporting that he has already spoken to the Indian Prime Minister (Jawaharlal Nehru) who was sympathetic and authorized Mountbatten to send for Devadas Gandhi and Sahney, representing the Hindustan Times and the Indian News Chronicle, to put the views of the Government that officers should not be attacked in the press, and that such attacks should not be made on the British officers who have volunteered to remain in India. He comments on the future of the Boundary Force, declaring that Baldev Singh has put forward a scheme for separation, that both Nehru and Chundrigar are anxious for separation, and that he himself is greatly relieved that Auchinleck shares this view. Typescript, signed, with a holograph postscript, suggesting a meeting between himself, Auchinleck, [Sir Frank] Messervy (Commander-in-Chief, Pakistan Army) and [Sir Rob] Lockhart (C-in-C, Indian Army).
