Administrative / Biographical History

Peter Redford Scott Lang (1850-1926), professor of mathematics at St Andrews University from 1879 until his retirement in 1921. He had studied at Edinburgh University, and taught there before being appointed to St Andrews.

Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847-1935), conductor and composer. He studied the violin in Thuringia, went on to compose orchestral works, songs and operas. He was principal of the Royal Academy in London and conductor for the Philharmonic Society.

Alexander Ferrier Mitchell (b.1822) was the son of David Mitchell, convenor of Local Guilds, Brechin, and Elizabeth Ferrier. He studied at United College and then St Mary's College, St Andrews, and was licensed by Brechin presbytery in 1844. He worked as minister of Dunnichen from 1846 to 1849, but was appointed professor of Oriental Languages at St Andrews University in 1848, so he demitted from his charge. He held this post until 1868, when he was appointed professor of Ecclesiastical History. He retired in 1894.
