Scope and Content

Letters from Samuel's uncle, the diplomat Richard Hill. These letters reflect the aid and guidance Samuel received from his uncle as he was establishing himself in the world. 2/6/1/1/2-4 were written to Samuel as he was travelling in France in 1712: Richard Hill arranges letters of credit for Samuel, sends his passport, and arranges contacts for his nephew; he is to approach [Sir Thomas] Hanmer to see if he can be received by the Prince and Princesse de Vaudemont. Other letters in the bundle relate to financial and property matters: as early as 1714 Samuel seems to have taken over some responsibility for certain estates which were settled on him by his uncle. 2/6/1/1/10 (1722) mentions Samuel acting as landlord and proprietor of all the lands Richard purchased from the Duke of Montagu, stating that Samuel should receive all the rents and profits of these estates from Lady Day 1722 [ie. estates in Warwickshire; see EGT/2/1]; 2/6/1/1/11 relates to the finalisation of the conveyance of these estates to Samuel; in this letter and the next Richard also offers advice to his nephew regarding Lord [Trevor Hill, the 1st Viscount] Hillsborough's failure to make any repayments on a loan of £2,000 made to him by Samuel in 1720. 2/6/1/1/5 includes a response written by Samuel Hill.

EGT/2/6/1/1/1-8 are in French.
