The Society of Clerks of the Peace of the Counties was set up in the nineteenth century to confer on all matters where the status, duties, responsibilities and interests of the Clerks and Deputy Clerks of the Peace were concerned. Following the Local Government (Clerks) Act, 1931, the constitution of the Society was revised and the rules were amended in 1932. The name of the Society was changed to the Society of Clerks of the Peace of Counties and of Clerks of County Councils and Clerks and Deputy Clerks of County Councils became eligible for membership as well as Clerks and Deputy Clerks of the Peace. It changed its name to the Society of County Clerks in 1972. During the consultation period prior to local government reorganisation in 1974, there were some discussions about amalgamation of clerks' societies between representatives of this society and the Society of Town Clerks. However, after local government reorganisation in 1974, the Society of County Clerks ceased to exist and a new society, the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (SOLACE) was created. This was established as the representative body for chief executives and senior managers of all UK local authorities and related organizations.
