Scrap book of E.A. Bowles relating to Japanese gardens

Scope and Content

The spine of the volume is embossed ‘Japanese gardens. Cuttings’. Pasted into the volume are items relating to Japanese gardens and Japan including:

Flyers for a book on Japanese architecture, for landscape architect services, a Japanese garden house, nurseries, and suppliers of garden ornaments, 1937 and undated

Press cuttings, 1904-1941 and undated

Soft cover of a book ‘Japanese Gardens’ by Mrs Basil Taylor, c.1912

Postcards and catalogue of Yokohama Nursery Co Ltd, 1904 and undated

Photographs of wisteria at Myddelton House garden, 1940

Offprint of articles, c.1878-1946

Enclosures were removed during cataloguing and stored in a separate folder for preservation purposes, reference EAB/1/2/1 (2 of 3). They comprise a greetings card from Mabel S.S. Crane with printed image of a Japanese garden, undated, and press cuttings, c.1878-1939

Some enclosures had been removed prior to cataloguing (original positions not recorded) and were found in a folder labelled ‘Loose from Japanese gardens album’, reference EAB/1/2/1 (3 of 3). They comprise invoices for books from Wheldon & Wesley and from A. West & Co, 1935-1936, original biro ink drawing of an unidentified ornament, undated [c.1930s], and article from ‘Country Life’ entitled ‘Japan Old and New’, 1938

This volume may have been rebound in 1957 (see Library Committee minutes, 2 Apr 1957). It remains fragile and requires careful handling. Readers are required to wear gloves to protect photographs and are asked to take care when turning pages and unfolding and re-folding folded items
