Scope and Content

Bundle of typescript and manuscript summaries and statistics, compiled 1920-1921, relating to various types of nerve injuries treated, largely by Platt, at Grangethorpe Hospital between 1916 and 1921, mostly between 1917 and 1919. These notes and summaries were probably used for the creation of statistics on the treatment of nerve injuries at Grangethorpe and probably formed the basis of Platt's 1921 monograph, The surgery of peripheral nerve injuries of war. The bundle contains the following pieces:

  • /1-11 Typescript summaries of sciatic nerve injuries, dated December 1920, with manuscript annotations. The summaries cover operations from 1916-1920, and are arranged alphabetically by patient name. The document summarises the diagnosis, operation, and recovery details of each case. Later cases correspond to cases marked 'N' in the Grangethorpe operation book (PLA/1/2/1).
  • /12-14 Manuscript notes for compilation of recovery statistics for various nerve operations.
  • /15-42 Typescript and manuscript summaries of ulnar nerve injuries, dated December 1920, with manuscript annotations. The summaries cover operations from 1916-1920, and are arranged largely alphabetically by patient name. The document summarises the diagnosis, operation, and recovery details of each case.
  • /43-46 Manuscript notes for compilation of statistics.
  • /47-54 Typescript summaries of cases relating to musculo-spiral nerves and posterior interosseus nerves, dated December 1920, with manuscript annotations. The summaries cover operations from 1917-1919, and are arranged alphabetically by patient name. The document summarises the diagnosis, operation, and recovery details of each case. Later cases correspond to case marked 'N' in operation book (PLA/1/2/1).
  • /55-57 Loose manuscript summaries of operations and results for ulnar nerve injuries
  • /58 Manuscript notes for operation and result of gunshot wound, 1919, with prognosis, signed by Stopford.
  • /59-87 Manuscript summaries of operations on median nerves, dated December 1920, covering operations in the period 1916-1920.
  • /88 Typescript list of names and diagnosis after nerve explorations, dated 18 January 1921.
  • /89 Manuscript notes for compiling statistics relating to musculo-spiral nerves.
  • /90 Typescript summaries for brachial plexus cases, dated December 1920, with manuscript annotations. The summaries cover operations from 1917-1919. The document summarises the diagnosis, operation, and recovery details of each case.
  • /91-93 Manuscript notes for compilation of statistics relating to nerve injuries.
  • /94 Letter from Walmesley, superintendent of Grangethorpe Hospital, 29 October 1929, who was sending Platt the notes which had been discovered in the cellar.
