Scope and Content

Box of miscellaneous correspondence arranged in chronological order. Most pieces are letters to Platt, but there are also some copy replies from Platt and some photographs and obituaries. Subjects covered by the correspondence include papers and addresses given by Platt, Platt's ninetieth birthday, the presidency of the IFSC, Platt's paper on the future of university departments of surgery, and the Royal College of Surgeons. Correspondence of particular interest includes a letter and cuttings from Professor Stephen Taylor on poverty, wealth and health in England and Canada (1975), correspondence with D.W. Purser about the Ethel Hedley Hospital and the North West Orthopaedic Club (1968-1969), a letter and signed photograph from Ronald E. Evans, NASA astronaut, on whom Ike McReynolds had done a Putti-Platt operation (he is also referred to in Charles Bradford correspondence file, PLA/7/19), and a copy of letter to Rowland Huston giving detailed information about orthopaedic services during the first world war (9 August 1978). Other correspondents include Hugh Lett, Pat Moynihan, M. Hackenbroch, 'Debb' Devonshire, William Mansfield Cooper, Ellen Jennings, Frank Stinchfield, Hedley [Atkins], Robert Merle d'Aubigne, Sir Henry Osmond Clarke ('Nobby'), Jonathon Rhoads and Sir Derrick Dunlop.
