Manuscript travel diaries

Scope and Content

Detailed manuscript journals of some of Platt's foreign visits and lecture tours, namely visits to Israel in 1953 and 1964, a lecture tour in India in 1958, a tour of Australasia in 1961 and visits to the United States of America and Canada in the 1960s and 1970s. A number of these visits were funded by the British Council, and these diaries were used by Platt in his composition of reports on his visits. Platt later recognised the interest of his experiences to other surgeons, and made typescript copies of many of his diaries to be distributed among colleagues (these copies can be found in the next subseries), many of the original diaries were destroyed. Of these surviving manuscript diaries, only the diaries for the visit to India are covered by the series of typescript copies. All the diaries give detailed daily entries, describing Platt's travel experiences, visits to hospitals and friends, and meetings with important individuals. Some of the diaries also contain loose papers, such as speech notes, invitations and schedules.

This subseries has been arranged into four sub-subseries for visits to different countries, within each sub-subseries items are in chronological order.
