Papers relating to the Bentinck family and Hoare's Bank, 1704-1774

The collection comprises:

Deed of discharge of Sir Richard Hoare, knight and Alderman of the City of London, from the trusteeship of the marriage settlement of Henry Bentinck, Lord Woodstock [eldest son of the 1st Earl of Portland] and his wife Lady Elizabeth Noel, to be replaced by Brooke Bridges; 5 Jul. 1704 (MS 376/1) This deed is a duplicate of Pl F2/2/7 in the Portland (London) collection.

Letter from James Cresset to Messrs Hoare and Company, requesting that mortgage deeds of lands held by Count Bentinck be passed to Thomas Smith of Gray's Inn for the purpose of drawing up discharges of Mr Adair from the mortgages; endorsed with an acknowledgment of receipt of the deeds by Thomas Smith; 28 Feb. 1761 (MS 376/2)

Promissory note of J. Bentinck for £400 payable to Richard Hoare Esq. four months after date at 4 percent; 11 Apr. 1774 (MS 376/3)

William, 1st Count Bentinck (1704-1774), was the 1st Earl of Portland's second son (and the eldest by his second marriage to Jane Temple). Although he lived all his adult life in the Netherlands, he was the owner of the Terrington St Clements estate in Norfolk. His second son John A. Bentinck (1737-1775), a British naval captain who inherited the Terrington St Clements estate, is probably the J. Bentinck mentioned in the third item in this collection. Count Bentinck was the half-brother of Henry Bentinck, Lord Woodstock, the eldest son of the 1st Earl of Portland by his first wife and later 1st Duke of Portland.
