Papers of James Torre of Syndall Hall (Sandal), West Yorkshire

Archive Collection

Scope and Content

The papers of James Torre (1748-1816) arrived in the Brynmor Jones Library as part of a second large deposit of solicitors' papers for Crust Todd and Mills of Beverley. This is a very small collection of legal papers such as papers of title and all are related to property involved in a marriage settlement between James Torre and Caroline Cotes, a widow, in 1791. The settlement is included and can also be found at DDCV/205/17-18.

Administrative / Biographical History

James Torre was the direct descendant of James Torre (1649-1699), a genealogist who wrote five volumes on the nobility and gentry and a scholar of ecclesiastical antiquities especially for the city of York (his heraldic collections are now spread between the British Library and York Minster Archives). Shortly before he died he purchased the manor of Syndall which passed to his son, Nicholas, by his second wife, Anne Lister (Dictionary of National Biography).

Nicholas Torre's son, James Torre, was the father of the James Torre whose papers are at DDCV(2)/66. James Torre was the eldest of at least five sons several of whom were educated at Cambridge. James Torre was born in 1748, schooled at Beverley and then was admitted as a pensioner to Trinity College in 1766. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1769 and was awarded BA in 1771. He lived at Syndall Hall in West Yorkshire. He married first Esther Milne in 1774 and second Caroline Cotes in 1791. She was a widow with a daughter of the same name and brought land in Beverley into the marriage. James Torre seems to have been succeeded as lord of the manor of Syndall by a son and grandson of the same name though the family did not always reside in the West Riding (Alumni Cantabrigiensis; Walford, The county families).
