The cover of the notebook bears the title: 'Malt made and licensed in the years 1810 and 1811';in fact, entries in the volume are dated up to 1814. Each page contains five columns: date, the nameof the person whose malt was licensed, and the weight in terms of quarters, stones and pounds. Mostof the volume is made up of this type of entry. The name of Henry Daws occurs regularly. The volumeincludes a few loose leaves, detailing accounts of unpaid duty on barley and malt.

It is difficult to judge from internal evidence whether the account book which comprises thiscollection was the property of someone producing malt, licensing it, or collecting duty from it.Although no documented provenance is available, the notebook was probably compiled by a localmaltster or malt licenser. Several references to the name Henry Daws, and a similarity ofhandwriting, suggests a link between these records and a separate volume, which records accounts ofa Henry Daws, identified in them as a maltster or brewer and a Justice of the Peace inNottinghamshire (See GB 159 56-60).
