Papers of the Royal College of Nursing Student Nurses Association

Scope and Content

This collection contains papers relating to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Student Nurses Association, an affiliated but separately organised RCN body until its amalgamation with the rest of the RCN in 1968.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal College of Nursing Student Nurses Association (SNA) was established as an affiliated organisation to the Royal College of Nursing in 1925 because according to the College rules, only qualified nurses could be members at that time. The students gained a place on Council and a new category of membership in 1968 when the SNA amalgamated with the College. There was no new department created but the Student Nurses Association or 'RCN Students' has retained a group identity within the College ever since.
