Administrative / Biographical History

The Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers was founded in 1889 as the Northern Counties Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Hackney Carriage Employees. In 1893 it became the Northern Counties Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Hackney Carriage Employees and Horsemen in General; in 1902 the Tramway, Hackney Carriage Employees and Horsemen's Association; and in 1903 the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers. In 1919 it merged with the London and Provincial Union of Licensed Vehicle Workers to become the United Vehicle Workers.

Authority files exist for the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers (GB 152 AAR204) and its predecessor organisations : the Tramway, Hackney Carriage Employees and Horsemen's Association (GBR 0152 AAR205), the Northern Counties Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Hackney Carriage Employees and Horsemen in General (GBR 0152 AAR206) and the Northern Counties Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Hackney Carriage Employees (GBR 0152 AAR213).

Custodial History

As a predecessor of the Transport and General Workers' Union the initial deposit was made in 1976 by that union. Accruals to the deposit are listed under the entry for the Transport and General Workers' Union (MSS.126/TG) . The archive has been deposited in the Centre on indefinite loan.
