James Ashcroft Noble was Helen Thomas' father.

Journalist, critic and editor in Liverpool and London. Influenced Edward's reading and writing until his early death in April 1896.

Helped place Edward's numerous essays and encouraged his friendship with his daughter Helen.

Helen had an older sister, Irene, who married Hugh McArthur, a younger sister, Mary Geraldine Noble, who married Arthur Valon, and a brother called Lance.
